ARCHAEOLOGICAL-TOURIST PARK Suacium, Shas, Šas, Svač

The mystified unexplored heritage!

The medieval town of Suacium, Shas, Šas, Svač near Ulcinj-Ulqin, located on the hill above Shasi Lake, is among the most attractive "dead cities" on the Adriatic coast.

Established as a city since the early Middle Ages, (at this time in literature known as Suatio, Suaço, Savocci, Svaciao), built from large stones, and surrounded by the wall, which carries great architectural and artistic values, even today the city gates preserve the beauty of the distant past.
This ancient dwelling place except for the convenient position and historical importance also offers appropriate life conditions, special conditions for farming, agriculture, and fishing.

By the remains of large blocks of stones on the divisions of the fortress, which rise above the Shasi Lake, and its position in the strategic antic Roman road Olcinium-Scodra, it's easy to conclude that once upon a time this place flourished.

Suacium was mentioned for the first time in the Pope Alexander II decree in 1067. By legends, it has had churches as much as a year has a day which is a unique occasion in the whole world.

Unknown writer and his manuscript “Secondo l’Antica Dulcigno Descrizione …” he stated that in this territory is found a very old city called Shas (Svatsh) were the footsteps of all 365 churches are seen 15 miles from Ulqin.

And in this manuscript, is also written “near the city are the lake, caves, water source, Lisnj mountain, Shas levee and gates where the Caesarea captain died, dreadfully fighting against....

Churches that are visible now there are only eight, among which two can be regarded as monumental, although they were ruined.

If underwater research could be done, it would be found more of monuments. During the summer, when the level of water in Lake Shasi is very low, it can be seen parts of old residential houses.

Unique St. Paul Baptist image as a guardian of the city is also immortalized in numismatics, because they made their own coins which held the inscription "Suacium".

Many other remains of this medieval city were found in rocks, some remaining parts of the castle also, but this ancient heritage city is still unexplored.
